Петя Илиева има докторска степен с дисертация “Българското изкуство и фолклор като международни мостове и културна дипломация” и магистърска степен по живопис и естетика. Нейни изложби са показвани в редица галерии в България и в чужбина, на шест континента – например в Българския културен институт в Лондон, в българските посолства в Париж и Делхи, на различни места в САЩ (Ню Йорк, Вашингтон, Чикаго), във Виена, Брюксел, Прага, Братислава, Валенсия, в Япония, Ливан, Катар, Китай, Султанат Оман, Антарктида – остров Ливингстън. Петя Илиева е и реставратор на стенописи и автор на научни публикации в областта на културното наследство и изкуството. Тя е основател на ежегодния фестивал на културите на народите Art4Diplomacy и работи с всички чуждестранни дипломатически мисии в България.

Petia Ilieva deține un doctorat cu teza “Arta și folclorul bulgar ca punți internaționale și diplomație culturală” și un master în pictură și estetică. Expozițiile sale au fost prezentate în mai multe galerii din Bulgaria și din străinătate, pe șase continente – de exemplu, la Institutul Cultural Bulgar din Londra, la Ambasadele Bulgariei din Paris și Delhi, în diverse locuri din SUA (New York, Washington, Chicago), la Viena, Bruxelles, Praga, Bratislava, Valencia, în Japonia, Liban, Qatar, China, Sultanatul Oman, Antarctica – Insula Livingston. Petya Ilieva este, de asemenea, restaurator de fresce și autor de publicații științifice în domeniul patrimoniului cultural și al artei. Este fondatoarea unui festival anual al culturilor națiunilor numit Art4Diplomacy și colaborează cu toate misiunile diplomatice străine din Bulgaria.

Impressions from the visit to Iran of a Bulgarian visual artist who builds bridges through her art

Petya Ilieva holds a PhD with the dissertation “Bulgarian Art and Folklore as International Bridges and Cultural Diplomacy” and an MA in Painting and Aesthetics. Her exhibitions have been shown in a number of galleries in Bulgaria and abroad, on sixt continents – for example at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in London, at the Bulgarian Embassies in Paris and Delhi, at various venues in USA (New York, Washington, Chicago), in Vienna, Brussels, Prague, Bratislava, Valencia, in Japan, Lebanon, Qatar, China,  Sultanate of Oman, Antarctica – Livingston Island. Petya Ilieva is also a restorer of frescoes and author of scientific publications in the field of cultural heritage and art. She is the founder of an annual festival of cultures of nations called Art4Diplomacy and works with all foreign diplomatic missions in Bulgaria.

Unlike what the Western media has always been trying to portray, Iran is one the safest countries in the world for foreign tourists and travelers.

Iran, officially the Islamic Republic of Iran, is a country in Western Asia. It is bordered by Iraq and Turkey to the west, by Azerbaijan and Armenia to the northwest, by the Caspian Sea and Turkmenistan to the north, by Afghanistan and Pakistan to the east, and by the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf to the south. It covers an area of 1.64 million square kilometers, making it the 17th largest country in the world, and has a population of 86 million.

Иран, официално Ислямска република Иран, е държава в Западна Азия. На запад граничи с Ирак и Турция, на северозапад – с Азербайджан и Армения, на север – с Каспийско море и Туркменистан, на изток – с Афганистан и Пакистан, а на юг – с Оманския и Персийския залив. Alexander Fedotov was a Bulgarian orientalist of Russian origin, who was a specialist in East Asia, but also in the Mongolian and Tibetan space. He also had mutual sympathy for Iranians, Indians and other Eastern nations.

Unfortunately, both my trips to Iran were official. I say “unfortunately” because I never had the opportunity to walk around Tehran, Isfahan or Shiraz on my own. I realized long ago that if you want to feel the spirit of a country, of a people, you have to “go with the flow”, try to swim with the current, not “fight” the onslaught of local traditions, customs and tastes.

We landed in Tehran both times at night: the plane flies over the city for 30-40 minutes and you say to yourself: what must this city that has no beginning and no end be like. Tehran turned out to be almost endless; you can neither walk around this megalopolis of ten million people, nor see it all. I found a few places “for me” in it: the central part, home to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and some magnificent museums around it, including the Koran Museum; Tehran Square, of which I probably saw only a fraction; the Museum of Modern Art. Overall, Tehran is a somewhat faceless city; you won’t find any mosques or historic mausoleums, except perhaps for Ayatollah Khomeini’s tomb, which has become a place of pilgrimage for millions of Iranians.

Alexander Fedotov era un orientalist bulgar de origine rusă, care a fost specialist în Asia de Est, dar și în spațiul mongol și tibetan. El de asemenea avea simpatie reciprocă pentru iranieni, indieni și alte popoare din Est.  

Din păcate, ambele mele călătorii în Iran au fost oficiale. Spun “din păcate” pentru că nu am avut niciodată ocazia să mă plimb singură prin Teheran, Isfahan sau Shiraz. Mi-am dat seama cu mult timp în urmă că, dacă vrei să simți spiritul unei țări, al unui popor, trebuie să te “lași dus”, să încerci să înoți cu curentul, nu să “lupți” cu asaltul tradițiilor, obiceiurilor și gusturilor locale.

Am aterizat la Teheran de ambele ori noaptea: avionul zboară deasupra orașului timp de 30-40 de minute și îți spui: cum trebuie să fie acest oraș care nu are nici început și nici sfârșit. Teheranul s-a dovedit a fi aproape nesfârșit; nu poți nici să te plimbi prin acest megalopolis de zece milioane de locuitori, nici să îl vezi pe tot. Am găsit câteva locuri “pentru mine” în ea: partea centrală, unde se află Ministerul Afacerilor Externe și câteva muzee magnifice din jurul său, inclusiv Muzeul Coranului; piața din Teheran, din care am văzut probabil doar o sutime; Muzeul de Artă Modernă. În general, Teheranul este un oraș oarecum fără chip; nu veți găsi nicio moschee sau mausoleu istoric, cu excepția, poate, a mormântului ayatollahului Khomeini, care a devenit un loc de pelerinaj pentru milioane de iranieni.

Александър Федотов е български ориенталист от руски произход, специалист по Източна Азия, а също и по монголското и тибетското пространство. Той също така изпитваше взаимни симпатии с иранците, индийците и много други източни народи.

Уви, и двете ми пътувания до Иран, бяха официални. Казвам “уви”, защото така и не ми се отдаде да се разходя из Техеран, Исфахан или Шираз сам. Отдавна разбрах, че ако искаш да усетиш духа на една страна, един народ, трябва да му “се оставиш”, да се опиташ да плуваш по течението, а не да “се бориш” с напора на местните традиции, обичаи и вкусове.

В Техеран и двата пъти кацах нощем: самолетът лети над града в продължение на 30-40 минути и си казваш: какъв ли трябва да е този град, който няма ни начало, ни край. Техеран се оказа почти безкраен; този десетмилионен мегаполис не можеш нито да го обходиш, нито да го видиш целия. В него открих няколко “мои” места: централната част, където е разположено Министерството на външните работи, а край него – няколко великолепни музея, в това число Музеят на Корана; техеранския пазар, от който видях вероятно само една стотна; Музеят на съвременното изкуство. Като цяло Техеран донякъде е безлик град, в него не ще откриете исторически джамии или мавзолеи, с изключение, може би, на гроба на Аятолах Хомейни, който се е превърнал в място на поклонничество за милиони иранци.

Alexander Fedotov was a Bulgarian orientalist of Russian origin, who was a specialist in East Asia, but also in the Mongolian and Tibetan space. He also had mutual sympathy for Iranians, Indians and other Asian nations.  

In 2012 I had the extraordinary good fortune to visit Iran. I won’t hide it – it was a long-held dream of mine. My interest in the country during my school years determined my career direction – so I dedicated myself to the Orient and became an Orientalist.

One could talk endlessly about Iran, its history, philosophy and literature, but no story would be complete, so rich is the Iranian cultural treasure. Thousands of books have been written about Iran, but none tells the whole story – so much is still to be learned. In this year, declared by UNESCO, at Iran’s proposal, the Year of Dialogue among Civilisations, we are talking about Iran’s cultural greatness, its thinkers, philosophers and poets, whose fame continues to spread even today, whose works continue to stir the minds and hearts of people.

One of these poets was Shamsiddin Muhammad (1325-1390), known throughout the world as Hafez. He was born and lived in Shiraz, one of the most beautiful cities in Iran. Shiraz, located in the south of Iran, is called ‘the city of roses’. He has been praised by not a few Iranian and foreign writers and poets. The narrow streets of this city still preserve not a few legends and tales of its illustrious inhabitants. Many tourists still come to Shiraz today to immerse themselves in the colourful atmosphere of the Orient, to feel its ancient history, to experience the unforgettable poems of Saadi, Hafez and other poets.
