Sinopsis

Rana Soleimani

Synopsis

Rana Soleimani

This summary of the novel “The Ulysses Syndrome” by Rana Soleimani was shared with the Persian Bridge of Friendship on the occasion of the first anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini, which sparked protests and gave birth to the movement “Women. Life. Freedom”. Psychologists associate the Ulysses syndrome or emigrant syndrome with chronic and multiple stress – a picture of extreme migratory grief, not a mental disorder, that appears in immigrants who live in very adverse situations (loneliness, exclusion, fear and helplessness).

Nina, a young woman, decides to escape from Iran after the thugs of the Islamic Republic attack the University of Tehran’s campus, beat the students to death, arrest her husband, Isaac, and insult and lash her in Evin Prison. Once she is out of prison her husband disappears without leaving any trace. The families of the newly-married couple cannot even find his grave. Nina’s brother, Sina, who is her only friend and consolation, after going to America, also dies in a freak accident while swimming in the sea. His body is also not found. Left totally friendless and lonely, Nina becomes very depressed, idles away her days in the house, reading her husband’s books and looking after her baby.  Finding living in Iran intolerable, she decides to illegally escape. She obtains a fake passport in Turkey and is told to flush it down the toilet when she arrives in Sweden.
